Christmas Eve Sadness & Joy

Yes, I know Christmas has come and gone, but I'm going to pretend like it just happened and catch up around here . . .

Our Christmas Eve was far from typical.  My Uncle Larry died that evening.  Heartbreaking for those who knew and loved this kind, gentle, funny, reserved man.  We met at Candy's house knowing that there was a chance that we wouldn't even see her since she was staying with Aunt Kay and Kristi until her dad passed away . . . at any moment.  I can't imagine just waiting for something you so badly DON'T want, yet because of current circumstances are begging for . . . death.

Shortly after we ate, we got the news that he had died.  Kay, Candy, and Kristi would be joining us in a couple hours.  They wanted us to continue with our planned festivities and be there for them when they were ready to come.

When they arrived, there were a lot of tears, hugs, words, and lack of words.  Aunt Kay said that she was thankful that he died on Christmas Eve.  She thought it was fitting that he could be in heaven for the day we celebrate Christ's birth.  Thankful for that, yes.  Heartbroken, of course!

It didn't seem quite right to continue with our plans, but the kids were ready to begin their play that they had talked about for a looooong time, so the show went on.

We started by singing "Away in the Manger."

Angels:  Mary, Leah, & Brianna (Claire is missing)

Joseph, Mary, & Jesus:  Luke, Hannah, Sarah

Shepherds:  Emily & Joy
Wise Men:  Gracie, Carter, & Adam
And the star . . . Cora!  :)
It was really more like a scene than a play.  We all sang a few songs while they posed.  It was all about the plotting and planning and less about dialogue, I guess.  :)  They did a great job and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We did a quick white elephant type gift exchange and then Santa (Danny) and Santa Jr. (Adam) showed up on scooters at the back door.  Parents each put in a small gift for each child, so they come away with all kinds of loot.  Danny does such a great job each year.  We're thankful for him taking on Grandpa B.'s role after that Santa retired.

We got to pose with them both!
